The whole duty of man........

"Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the well, then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to the Almighty who gave it. "Vanity of vanities," says the preacher, " All is vanity."

"Fear the Almighty and keep His commandments, For this is the whole duty of man.
For the Almighty will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether it is good or whether it is evil." - Ecclesiastes 12:6, 13

Work, work, work

One of the ten commandments states: "Six days shall thou labor and do all your work but on the 7th day you shall rest." "Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, which having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep - So shall your poverty come on you like a robber, and your need like an armed man." - Exodus 20:9 and Proverbs 6:6-11

When animals give birth.....

Cassie, my favorite dog, gave birth to 6 puppies on Nov. 3. This is her third delivery. Days before that, she dug up soils at the backyard in preparation for such event and kept on changing her mind where to finally settle for her puppies. She's a good nursing mother and makes sure they're safe and secure. Our responsibility is to feed Cassie with more soups and dog food for her to produce plenty of milk. Welcome to the world, puppies!

Back pain

I had a severe back pain for 4 days and promised myself not to carry weights more than I can bear. It was not a joke being immobile for how many days suffering from sleepless nights and staying home or lying down almost the whole day. While at home, books would be my partners to enlighten me or lighten my load, the back pain problem. Next time, I hope this will not happen again to me , or else with anybody else. So here are some prevention tips:

" Maintain your back's strength and flexibility with daily exercise.

Never carry a heavy bag in one hand or on one shoulder. Divide the contents between two bags, held one on each side. Better still, carry a backpack (use both straps), or sling a long-handled bag over the opposite shoulder. (This is what my sister Jenny does whenever she travels, the weight must always be balanced on both shoulders. Indeed she has no back pain though she travels a lot with heavy backpacks).

To lift a heavy object, get as close to the object as possible, bend your knees, then lift by straightening your knees while keeping your back as straight as you can.

Don't twist your back while holding something heavy; move your feet to turn your whole body instead.

Sit with your back straight, making sure that your lower back is well supported. When driving, recline the seat to increase the thigh-to-trunk angle.

Wear comfortable shoes with good support that will not cause an abnormal gait. Placing orthotics prescribed by a podiatrist in the shoes can often reduce back strain.

If you work for long hours at a computer, make certain that you sit correctly. Use a footrest if you can't place your feet flat on the floor.

Never stoop to do a ground-level job, such as weeding in the garden. Kneel instead.

Check that your mattress is firm enough to support your back, but not overly hard. If it is too soft, you can make it firmer by placing a board between the mattress and base.

Stress management

As an accountant, I normally meet deadlines for tax payments and monthly reports. When clients call me about internal tax problems , my heart beats fast and taking anti-hypertensive drugs or betablockers calm me down. Reading books about how to control these feelings is a great advantage. A big help..... so I want to share these stress-management strategies with you:

l. Relaxation - these include:

taking regular work breaks.....going on vacations.... enjoying hobbies.... doing breathing exercise... writing in a journal.... watching film comedies........ enjoying pets..... talking to friends................ praying or meditating.....soaking in a warm, scented bath..... visiting a SPA or beauty salon...

2. For balance and perspective - accept that you can change only your behavior, not that of others...... accept that you cannot have everything you want..... recognize what really matters. forgive yourself and others..... try to see stressful situations as opportunities..... learn to say no..... reject perfectionism....... resist negative thinking...... don't magnify or belittle problems.... accept the inevitable, meaning "accept the things you can no longer change".

3. Relationships - other people can reduce or bring on stress. Nurture intimate relationships. Improve your communication skills. Recognize other people's feelings and separate them from your own. Deal with relationship problems. Keep in touch with friends. Offer encouragement and support to those around you.

Herbs

And the Almighty said, "See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.

"Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food", and it was so.

These herbs were created for man to eat and likewise for animals too.

Then the Almighty saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day (Genesis 1:29-31)

True happiness....

Many people pursue such things as money, beauty or fame to make them happy only to find that happiness eludes them. But let me quote the following to you:

"True happiness......

l. Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor; the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to them!

2. Happy are those who mourn; The Heavenly Father will comfort them!

3. Happy are those who are humble; they will receive what the Almighty has promised!

4. Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what the Almighty requires; He will satisfy them fully!

5. Happy are those who are merciful to others; The Almighty will be merciful to them!

6. Happy are the pure in heart; they will see the Almighty Father!

7. Happy are those who work for peace; The Almighty will call them His children!

8. Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what the Almighty requires; the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them!

9. Happy are you when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of evil lies against you because you are my followers. Be happy and glad, for a great reward is kept for you in heaven. This is how the prophets who lived before you were persecuted."

- The Sermon on the Mount - Matthew 5:3-11

Travel to Dumaguete City, Philippines

There is no direct flight from Davao City to Dumaguete City. A 45- minute ride from Davao via Cebu Pacific Air and another 3 hour ride to Liloan by bus then through fast craft for 15 minutes is the fastest way to commute before reaching the place. A "City of genuine friendship", that was the label I found along the Dumaguete highways while riding on a public utility vehicle bound for my sister's place in Upper Cantil-E. Strangers we were (my son traveled with me) but true to its label, Dumaguete people were indeed warm and friendly with their radiant smiles and hospitality.

The city is known for one of its best universities (Silliman University), best waterfalls and resorts . Valencia is one of the places to remember with lots of lanzones trees and very cold temperature even at daytime which reminded me of Baguio City, the City of Pines in Luzon and also Masara, Compostela Valley where I grew up.

To travel by sea (Ocean Ferry) is the cheapest way to travel back to Davao City (from Dumaguete to Cagayan de Oro City). You may catch the first trip through a Luxury liner (Rural Transit) in Cagayan de Oro at 1:30 a.m. via Bukidnon for another long travel , 6 hours at least bound for Davao City.

Human death

Here are some points for us to ponder about death:

l. "Don't put your trust in human leaders; no human being can save you.
When they die, they return to the dust; on that day all their plans come to an end ( Psalm 146:3-4).

2. "For the living know that they will die;
But the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward,
For the memory of them is forgotten.
Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished;
Nevermore will they have a share
In anything done under the sun (Ecclesiastes 9:5-6) .

3. "In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return (Genesis 3:19).

4. "Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth - those who have done good, to the RESURRECTION OF LIFE, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. (John 5:28-29)"

How do we pray....

In Luke 11:1 to 4 (The Holy Bible, The New KJV), 1983), one of the Messiah's disciples asked Him to teach the disciple how to pray and He answered:

When you pray, say:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
Give us day by day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins,
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one."

An additional verse about praying:

"But you, when you pray, go into your room and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
But when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

"Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

The Seven Positive Attitudes

The author of "Men, Women and Relationships" Dr. John Gray has this to say:

There are seven basic emotional needs or attitudes that are essential to creating
a truly loving and emotionally supportive relationship:

Love
Caring
Understanding
Respect
Appreciation
Acceptance
Trust

Psalm 104, blessings here and there.

This is a portion of Psalm 104 which I read at 4 this morning as part of my early morning praises to the wonderful Creator :

"You have set the earth firmly on its foundations, and it will never be moved.
You placed the ocean over it like a robe, and the water covered the mountains.
When you rebuked the waters, they fled; they rushed away when they heard your shout of command. They flowed over the mountains and into the valleys, to the place you had made for them. You set a boundary they can never pass, to keep them from covering the earth again. You make springs flow in the valleys, and rivers run between the hills, they provide water for the wild animals; there the wild donkeys quench their thirst. In the trees near by, the birds make their nests and sing.
From the sky you send rain on the hills, and the earth is filled with your blessings. You make grass grow for the cattle and plants for us to use, so that we can grow our crops and produce wine to make us happy, olive oil to make us cheerful, and bread to give us strength."

Praise the Almighty Heavenly Father, oh, my soul!

Gratitude

Out of our same mouths, come blessings and curses. Although we praise the Creator for the blessings we receive each day , at the same time we intentionally say demeaning words to our neighbors or people we meet daily. Our words are too many that we make mistakes and continue sinning through the words that we utter. Too many words, too many mistakes, too many mistakes, too many sins, and we must feel sorry for them and should try not to do them again.

It takes time for the seed to grow and become a plant or a tree and bear fruits. It takes time for the farmer to harvest the fruits of his labor. Everything takes time before the fruits reach us to satisfy our needs. But we are always thankful though our daily needs are wanting, the Creator has never failed us our daily physical food. Through this blog, I thank the Almighty Father for the land He has given us and for all the sustenance. To Him be the glory!

Feelings

How many of these feelings can you recall experiencing in the past week? How many have you expressed directly in words in the past week? How many have you felt but not expressed?

l. "I feel very angry."
2.. I'm annoyed."
3. "I'm bored."
4. "I'm excited!"
5. "I'm simply delighted."
6."I'm happy right now."
7. "I feel content."
8. "I feel so relaxed."
9. "I'm upset."

Try sharing these feelings with the people closest to you. Don't expect to guess at anyone else's feelings, and don't make anyone else guess at yours. Within a personal relationship, important feelings simply must be expressed. For maximum peace of mind, improved relationships, and better physical and psychological health, your goal should be to express yourself openly and directly - unless for some reason it is not appropriate or desirable to do so.

Sing your blues away.....

"Sing, sing a song, sing out loud, sing a good thing not bad, sing old happy, not sad. Sing, sing a song, make it simple to last your whole life long. Don't worry that it's not good enough for anyone else to hear, just sing, sing a song." La la la la la la la.

Yes, I sing when I'm happy or even when I'm not. It lifts my spirit, it lightens my load. Try it. You may not be a good singer, just sing. Your voice may not be a replica of those singers or divas but constant singing practice may make you one, who knows? It is a good exercise for your lungs, creates a healthy heart, makes a new you! And a merry heart does good like a medicine!

Laughter.....

1. Get laughter into your relationships. Tell jokes or humorous stories . A well-developed sense of humor that allows us to see the funny side of things is a good medicine and an undisputed social asset.

2. Obtain tapes or cassettes/compact discs of funny movies. Watch them or watch with a group. Read humorous stories, share them. See the beneficial effects on your body . Effects of laughter can actually cause the brain to release its own pain-killing secretions.

4. Determine to begin every conversation with a joke or good news. Feel the power and effects
of being positive.

5. You'll feel better and so will each person you talk to. It will help to raise your spirits and the other person's as well. It's a chain reaction.

LAUGH AND THE WORLD LAUGHS WITH YOU. CRY AND YOU CRY ALONE!

Dreams.....

"The Bible, as well as other great books of historical and revealed religion, shows traces of a general and substantial belief in dreams. Joseph saw eleven stars of the Zodiac bow to himself, the twelfth star. The fame of Egypt was revealed by a vision of fat and lean cattle. The parents of the Messiah were warned of the cruel edict of Herod, and fled with the Divine Child into Egypt.

Pilate's wife, through the influence of a dream, advised her husband to have nothing to do with the conviction of the Messiah. But the gross materialism of the day laughed at dreams, as it echoed the voice and verdict of the multitude, 'Crucify the Spirit, but let the flesh live.' Barabbas, the robber, was set at liberty.

If Julius Caesar had been less incredulous about dreams he would have listened to the warning which Calpurnia, his wife, received in a dream.

Plato concurred in the general idea prevailing in his day, that there were divine manifestations to the soul in sleep. Condorcet thought and wrote with greater fluency in his dreams than in waking life.

People dream now, the same as they did in medieval and ancient times."

- Dr. Brian R. Metcalfe

My dreams (especially when I dream at dawn) usually do come true. Coincidence? They warn me that something will happen that's why I make it a point to relay them to my husband or a close friend. In a dream, I saw my mother in a mirror wearing a purple veil walking in front of me. Days passed after that dream, when for real my sister told me my mother had an allergy starting from her neck, ears and up to her face. Since then, she was always wearing colored veil to cover her face. I saw my three uncles standing inside three bedrooms when I opened three different doors. The three of them died in the order that I saw them in my dream on three different dates. Dreams do warn me that somebody will get sick when I dream of this person wading in muddy waters. Again in a dream, my husband was trapped in a swampy water and I tried to rescue him. The following day, he had a mild heart attack and had to be treated three days in a hospital. My dream did warn me that my mom would get sick one day after seeing her standing on a deep cloudy pool. So many , many dreams I can no longer recall but I believe they do caution me of events that will certainly happen in the future. "In the last days, the Almighty says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. (Acts 2:17)

Fasting.

Fasting is an old custom, originating in ancient ritual, designed to promote health. The purpose of a fast is to cleanse the system of undigested residue, to stimulate the organs and glands, and to revitalize the entire system. Fasting does not necessarily mean abstaining from food, but does not entail following a specific diet of goods, liquids or a combination of both. Fasting should never result in dizziness, nausea or fatigue.

Many popular fasts may be detrimental to your health. A fast consisting of only water is valuable only in specific instances and not for prolonged periods of time. Water contains little nourishment and cannot cleanse the glandular system effectively or expel mucous from the digestive tract. Fasting for the first 10 hours of the day and then eating a heavy meal will drastically alter the metabolism and shock the system. It is not effective to try to combine eating with fasting. A fast should be followed for at least 24 hours or should not be attempted. Repeated fasting for one or more days a week, for months on end, will cause the stomach to repeatedly shrink and expand and may eventually harm the natural elasticity of the organ. Fasting for extreme periods of time may deplete vitamin and mineral reserves so badly that the body must metabolize its own bone marrow in order to continue functioning.

If you are mentally and physically prepared, however, fasting can be very beneficial to your health. A fast during an illness , such as a strict juice fast during a cold, can help the system to fight infection and heal wounds.

The length of a fast should be determined by your schedule. Do not attempt to fast when you are particularly busy or under severe mental or physical stress. It is important to remember that your method of ending a fast is just as vital as your method of fasting.

In the eyes of a child.....

In the eyes of a child , there is joy , there is laughter....

Yes, even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right.

The Messiah says in Matthew 18:3 "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me."

The Value of a friend, a husband, a wife....

Two are better than one.....

Because they have a good reward for their labor.

For if they fall, one will lift up his companion,

But woe to him who is alone when he falls,

For he has no one to help him up.

Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm

But how can one be warm alone?

Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him

And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Everything has its time ....

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die
A time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted
A time to kill, and a time to heal
A time to break down and a time to build up
A time to weep, and a time to laugh
A time to mourn and a time to dance
A time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones
A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing
A time to gain, and a time to lose
A time to keep and a time to throw away
A time to tear and a time to sew
A time to keep silence and a time to speak
A time to love and a time to hate
A time of war, and a time of peace.
BUT FOR THOSE WHO LOVE, time is eternal........

Longer life......

Tips for a healthier, longer life:

l. Pure water - drink clean, pure water daily.
2. Fresh juice - always have a juicer to make your own juice from carrots, cucumber, and other fruits and vegetables.
3. Stop eating animal products - these will clog arteries and will cause heart diseases and other ailments.
4. Eat more raw foods like nuts, raw carrots , fruits and vegetables.
5. Cleanse your colon by eliminating your bowels on a regular basis. For every three major meals a day, there should always be three bowel eliminations.
6. Detoxify - cleanse your entire system. For two days, eat nothing but raw vegetables of all kinds and sip three eight ounce glasses of distilled water a day . Do not eat or drink anything else. This fast will rid the body of debris in the system and helps metabolize the carbohydrates already present. In addition , the fast will stimulate digestive enzymes and tone the intestinal tract.
7. Walk more. Walk on barefoot. Breathe deeply.
8. Move more, stretch, dance, do aerobics. Observe animals. Cats and dogs do stretches each day. Monkeys swirl. Horses straddle. Avoid living a sedentary life. Be active.
9. Hydrotherapy - water is the universal solvent. Shower, cleanse your entire body with plenty of water. For every pain, do water therapy. Alternate hot and cold compress for injuries or pains.
10. Wear non-nylon clothings.
11. Use natural soaps.
12. Get rid of the television. TV news are source of negative energies, etc.
13. Throw your garbage. You'll get sick with it.
14. Express yourself. Negative emotions are emotional poisons formed in your body.
15. Laugh. Laugh. Laugh. Humor is the best medicine. Watch humorous movies, read jokes, share jokes.
16. Love your life. Life is only one breath away. It is a fleeting shadow.
18. Love more. Love your children, parents, even your enemies. Love being loving.
19. Always have your personal experience with the Almighty. Experience nature. Meditate.
Focus on the Almighty Creator. Praise Him, be grateful. Give thanks, pray.

Yes, Filipinos can.....

Heard from a television news item the other day that one of the happiest countries is Denmark. Why? First, it is one of the most prosperous countries in the world and land of the free. Another program on Philippine television "Wowowee " aired at noontime today with host Willie Revillame said Filipinos can just be as happy because we are all survivors despite all these crises (poverty, hunger, etc.). We never give up and lose hope because of our strong faith in the Almighty. And he added: Filipinos still long to win in lotteries (Philippine Lotto) and lastly, their last hope is joining "Wowowee" and win prizes allotted by ABS CBN at this noontime show. In contrast with Denmark, we are not a prosperous nation but Filipinos are happy people despite the food shortage, unemployment, insufficient housing and clothing needs and other problems. Yes, we can be and we will always be happy in any way we can - it has become part and parcel of our personality and our culture!

Taming the tongue....

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

With the tongue we praise our Master and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the Almighty Father's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.

He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.

A gentle answer turns away wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger.

And finally, pleasant words are a honeycomb, SWEET TO THE SOUL AND HEALING TO THE BONES.

Therefore let our hearts guide our mouth so we become wiser each day that our lips may promote instruction to many of our brothers who need it .

Of cats and dogs....

Haven't searched about cats and dogs yet , got no idea of their lifespan or which live longer, which are more genius and have good memories, or mind you, in terms of loyalty to their masters, which can we call loyalists , cats or dogs? I would say loyalists because they know their masters' smell from the tip of their hair to the tip of their toes.

"Rambo" , my sister Jenny's dog, a black Rottweiler , died of a heart attack as diagnosed by its vet yesterday. It's only natural to cry for his loss, he's been part of Jenny's life, a guard, a listener, a company. The last time I saw him was 2 years ago with another dog (a boxer), named "Ecus". The latter was sickly as I observed, eyes were watery and Ecus could hardly open them. Rambo has lots of energy, so big that his size would scare away neighbors and visitors. . He would run loose outside the fence and running and catching him was a big ordeal. Got no choice, I have to run after him and carry him anyway or bear the consequence. He would prefer eating dog foods, messing inside rooms especially the bathroom. A sign on its door would read, "always close the door" for "Rambo" and "Ecus", I supposed.

Dogs are man's best friends, yet until now, it still puzzles me. Why dogs not man or cats or monkeys or horses or birds? Why dogs? All I know is that dogs , if you continue feeding them would wag their tails as a sign of gratitude, and excitingly jump at you and give you a warm embrace upon your return. They're always there to greet their masters (if only they could smile and laugh) and their presence brings joy and beauty to life.

I share the same sentiment with my sister Jenny today and will likewise miss Rambo. There will always be other Rambo's around, the same dog's traits , talents and loyalty to his master. The old dog is gone but his wonderful , unforgettable memories are there to keep. And life must still go on .......

Forgiveness

"Then Peter came to the Messiah and asked, 'Master, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times? The Messiah answered, ' I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. " (Matthew 18:21) If you go on reading this verse, it is the parable of the unmerciful servant wherein the latter owed his master ten thousand talents. The King (master) demanded that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. The servant fell on his knees before his master, and begged to forgive him. The servant's master took pity on him, cancelled the debt and let him go. But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him and demanded to pay back what he owed him. His fellow servant begged to be patient with him and he will pay him back.

But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. The master learned about this unforgiving servant and called him. 'You wicked servant, he said, 'I cancelled all your debts because you begged me to but you had no mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?'

In anger his master turned him over to the jailers until he should pay back all he owed.

This is how the Heavenly Father will treat each of us unless we forgive our brother from our heart.

The conditions of forgiveness in this parable:

  1. Forgive your brother seventy-seven times.
  2. Forgive those brothers who have wronged you before the Heavenly Father forgives you.
  3. Finally, forgive your brother from your heart.

Friendship

Here are various quotations about friendship from various authors including those taken from the bible (I won't mention the authors if you won't mind).

"As gold more splendid from the fire appears, thus friendship brightens by the length of years.

The longer we live, and the more we think, the higher the value we learn to put on the friendship and tenderness .... of friends.

Purchase not friends with gifts; when thou cease to give, such will cease to love.

A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere. Before him, I may think aloud.

It is a mere and miserable solitude to want true friends without which the world is but a WILDERNESS.

You must act in your friend's interest whether it pleases him or not; the object of love is to serve, not to win.

There is no man so friendless but that he can find a friend sincere enough to tell him disagreeable thoughts.

Friendship with a man is friendship with his virtues, and does not admit assumptions of superiority.

A friend makes your laughter heartier, your cares lesser, and your joy deeper.

With a friend, you do not have to pretend or live in a make-believe world. ALL YOU EVER NEED IS TO BE YOURSELF.

I have three chairs in my house: one for solitude, two for friendship, three for COMPANY.

An honest answer is a sign of true friendship.

O my friend, may it come to pass, once, that when you are my friend I MAY BE YOURS."

THE HEALING WONDERS OF GARLIC & VINEGAR

Nature's miracle healing combination of garlic and apple cider vinegar can melt ugly bulges fast, control killer cholesterol, prevent heart disease and soothe away the aching pain of arthritis. Yes, they are being hailed as one of nature's miracle weapons in the ongoing medical battles with arthritis, cancer and heart disease.

And the potent garlic can be doubly effective when it is served up with apple cider vinegar, also praised by researchers as a powerful antidote for all kinds of illnesses.

A Weekly World News in-depth survey of medical researchers, herbalists, and health and nutrition journals has come up with dozens of useful garlic and vinegar facts, plus some fascinating prescriptions for good health. Here they are in alphabetical order:

ARTHRITIS:

Chop the cloves from two large heads of peeled garlic and let them stand for five minutes in a cup of warmed olive oil. Soak a thick sock in warm water, then wring it out. Fill the toe of the sock with the garlic mash and a little oil. Gently rub the poultice over aching areas for several minutes. You can also find relief by boiling garlic in a vegetable broth and sipping it slowly.

Apple cider vinegar (one teaspoonful) with a teaspoonful of honey, mixed in water and drunk morning and evening, also soothes arthritic pain.

ASTHMA:

A popular folk remedy for asthma is one or two cloves of garlic, with a spoonful of apple cider vinegar and honey each morning - on an empty stomach.

ATHLETES FOOT:

Apply a clove of garlic to the infected foot area nightly for half an hour, then wash with water. Your problem should be cleared up within a week.

BLADDER INFECTIONS:

A teaspoon of garlic juice is effective in killing off the bacteria responsible for many women's bladder infections.

BURNS:

Puncturing a garlic oil capsule and squeezing it on to a skin burn area speeds up the healing process.

CANCER:

For many years the National Cancer Institute has been studying how common foods can help safeguard against cancer - and garlic figures high on their research list.

It is in a food group that contains phytochemical compounds that researchers believe can inhibit cancer growth. Eating garlic, onions, scallions, and chives can reduce your risk of getting stomach cancer, according to a joint study by Chinese researchers and America's own National Cancer Institute. Their research found that healthy patients ate 42 pounds of garlic and other bulb vegetables a year, compared to only 34 pounds for its cancer victims.

Deadly colon cancer may be prevented by a substance in garlic called diallyl sulfide, found by researchers at University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital to be 75 percent effective in fighting off the disease in animal tests.

CANKER SORES:

Salad rich in garlic and onions, washed down with red raspberry tea, is an effective way of clearing up painful canker sores.

CHOLESTEROL:

Cholesterol levels in healthy test patients dropped on average from 237.4 to 221.4 in a mere three hours when they were given 50 grams of garlic along with four ounces of butter, proving that the dangerous effects of fatty foods can be controlled by adding garlic to your diet.

COLDS:

An old Russian remedy is to wedge a clove of garlic in your jaw between your teeth and your cheek like a wad of tobacco. Do not chew it. Colds have been known to vanish within hours using this technique. Follow this up with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and honey (a quarter cup of each) - particularly if you have a sore throat.

DIABETES:

If you're looking for a tasty diet which safeguards your health at the same time, look no further than a diet based on garlic, beans and rice, says New York nutritionist Dr. Charles Klein. As well as thinning your blood and improving circulation, these natural foods in combination are also effective in warding off diabetes.

Happiness is a choice

Who decides whether you shall be happy or unhappy? You do! You are just as happy as you make up your mind to be. I remember my mother singing this old church song early in the morning when she wakes up: "Sing to the mountains, sing to the seas, let your voices in your heart, this is the day that the Almighty Father has made, let all the earth rejoice!" This simple song lifts my spirit and starts my day right with a good choice, to be happy!

The habit of being happy is developed by practicing happy thinking. Start the day with happy thoughts and expect good things to happen to you. "A merry heart does good like a medicine"
says King Solomon in one of his proverbs. A famous psychologist says, "there is a deep tendency in human nature to become precisely like that which you habitually imagine yourself to be."

Let me share the following tips to you through this blog:

1. For the next 24 hours, deliberately speak hopefully about everything, about your job, about your health, about your future. Go out of your way to talk optimistically about everything. This will be difficult, for possibly it is your habit to talk pessimistically. From this negative habit, you must restrain yourself even if it requires an act of will.

2. You must feed your mind even as you feed your body, and to make your mind healthy you must feed it nourishing, wholesome thoughts. Therefore, today start to shift your mind from negative to positive thinking. Start at the beginning of the New Testament and underscore every sentence about FAITH. Continue doing this until you have marked every such passage in the four books, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Particularly note Mark ll, verses 22, 23, 24. They will serve as samples of the verses you are to underscore and fix deeply in your consciousness.

3. Then commit the underscored passages to memory. Commit one each day until you can recite the entire list from memory. This will take time, but remember you have consumed much more time becoming a negative thinker than this will require. Effort and time will be needed to unlearn your negative pattern.

4. Make a list of your friends to determine who is the most positive thinker among them and deliberately cultivate his society. Do not abandon your negative friends, but get closer to those with a positive point of view for a while, until you have absorbed their spirit, then you can go back among your negative friends and give them your newly acquired thought pattern without taking on their negativism.

5. Avoid argument, but whenever a negative attitude is expressed, counter with a positive and optimistic opinion.

6. Pray a great deal and always let your prayer take the form of thanksgiving on the assumption that the Almighty is giving you great and wonderful things; for if you think He is, He surely is. The Almighty will not give you any greater blessing than you can believe in. He wants to give you great things, but even He cannot make you take anything greater than you are equipped by faith to receive. 'According to your faith, be it unto you.' (Matthew 9:29). Lifelong learning beginning at mid-life.....

" How do we keep from 'growing old inside'? Surely only in community. The only way to make friends with time is to stay friends with people. If I try to deal with time by myself, I lose. Absolutely. Of that I am certain." - Robert McAfee Brown, 1980, p.18

"The most precious gift in the world is time. Time to do anything you want to do, whenever you want to do it... time gives you the golden opportunity to meet new friends, get involved in new activities, travel to new places. It's your chance to create, innovate, help others, be valuable in the community. It's your time to grow as a human being (Guide to Leisure, 50-plus magazine, 1981, p.2)

"We are complex, noisy, nosey creatures who need stimulation. Our activities, exercise, hobbies - and yes, our involved carings - all contribute to our psychological well-being and add spice to our everyday activities. In fact, the stress of our unexpected creative surprises draw us again and again to savor the change of creative experience. We need our arousals to motivate us, inspire us, teach us and give us pleasure. (Carlsen, unpublished material)

"The best thing for being sad is to learn something. That is the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your lonely love, you may see the world around you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honor trample in the sewer of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then - TO LEARN. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distruct, and never dream of regretting. Never stop learning ..... (T.H. White, "The Once and Future King ")

"Begin at once - not today, or tomorrow, or at some remote indefinite date, but right now, at this precise moment - to choose some subject, some concept, some great name or idea or event in history on which you can eventually make yourself the world's supreme expert. Start a crash program immediately to qualify yourself for this self-assignment through:

1. reading
2. research
3. reflection"

(Gross, 1982, pp. xii-xiii)

"Keep your body and your mind razor sharp. And always have something in the wings" (Rosenblum, l989, p. 34). Here's how:

Experiment with new careers, invest in learning, be active in sports and exercise programs, test new cuisine, produce art work, learn new hobbies, explore spiritual realm, write books, travel the nation and the world. Meet new friends, practice music, sing in choirs, play tennis, hike around the park night and morning. Contribute to the continuity, spirit and well-being of those around you. Pass along wisdom. . Try out something new. This is the idea of learning, growing, and creating. ("ADD LIFE TO YEARS, not years to life! " - Murlidhar Devidas Amte)

My childhood days, a reminiscence.......

Gazing at rainbows, catching colored butterflies , chasing fireflies at moonlit nights........ remind me of my family and my childhood here in Masara, high up in the rugged and western flank of Davao del Norte , Philippines , where the sun seemed to rise rather late , and the sounds of birds named "Kalaw" reminding me of the sun almost settling down . I could hear my father say "it's 5 p.m." when these birds sounded "Kaw kaw kaw". As a little girl growing up with two brothers and 2 sisters, daytime was the most enjoyable building toycars and small toytrucks out of tiny, raw avocado fruits , picking up wild strawberries and edible ferns and climbing up trees (the tallest climb I made was a lanzones tree fronting our house, the most challenging one was a kalamansi tree with all its thorny and slippery branches) . I remember picking up kalamansi fruits and sell them once a basket was full . My siblings and I somehow learned the idea of selling at a very young age from tomatoes, fried camotes, ice candies , banana barbecues, hotcakes for merienda, and delivering door- to door-newspapers and magazines to my father's co-workers in the mining site. Piles and piles of Tagalog comics I would first enjoy reading while enriching my vocabulary as a first grader.

Early morning breakfast with native ricecakes and "suman" wrapped in banana leaves reminded me of my mother, an optimist who would rather tell us "the pail is almost full" while it never will. I couldn't imagine the source of her power and strength rearing a big family of five children. A childhood life full of prayers , joys and excitements. Imagine this kind of life without a mother!

A great tutor, that was my father, imbuing us the value of education, teaching us the 3 R's before the age of 6, envisioning us to be professionals supporting us while earning only a meager income as a construction worker. Imagine another childhood life without a father!

Ahh, my childhood days....... so nice to remember!

The woman at midlife......

The reduced estrogen level in women at menopause ... the lowering of self-esteem and other major life changes at midlife (beginning the ages of 45 and 55), such as children leaving home and elderly parents growing frail - these are parts and parcel of midlife crisis for a woman.

Yet consider this a new beginning. Concentrate on your own interests which may bring excitements. Discover a new zest for life.

Fine collections at midlife..........

A wife....... a woman..... ...... worth far more than jewels, who could find? A capable wife whom her dear husband puts his confidence on saying he will never be poor because of her.....

Yes, a virtuous wife they say is one of the finest collections whose values increase as they grow older. For always the value of a jewel appreciates, never depleting , continuously glittering, always sparkling . Yes, good wives are indeed jewels.... as fine as silver as they age with time .

Now how could a husband say he becomes poor because of his wife? If he could only find a virtuous wife! For as long as she lives, she does him nothing but good all her life!
